Description:
The CRH is collaborating with the Anova Health Institute to provide technical support to scale up the MhINT programme and SMhINT materials to 10 primary healthcare clinics each in the Northern Cape and Limpopo provinces.
Training has begun in the Northern Cape with two components completed.
- Online training in the Brief Mental Health (BMH) tool to screen for depression, anxiety and alcohol use. The BMH was validated in the Amajuba district in KwaZulu-Natal and has been adopted for use by the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Health.
- A 4 day training in the MhINT facility-based counselling programme designed to train lay counsellors to confidently provide counselling in the MhINT depression, anxiety and adherence programme; adaptation to include the upskilling of Master Trainers; and capacitating those responsible for the mentoring and supervision of the programme to have first-hand knowledge of the content and delivery methodology as well as post training support requirements. The training methodology employs experiential and participatory learning rooted in the theory and practice of adult learning and teaching. The Anova Health Institute and the Northern Cape Department of Health will train additional lay counsellors in the programme.
- The next training phase will focus on the use of the Community Mental Health Education and Detection (CMED) tool by community health workers to provide mental health screening and psychoeducation for adults at a community level.
