Africa faces a critical shortage of skilled health data scientists, limiting the ability of institutions to generate and use high-quality data to address pressing health challenges in areas such as health systems strengthening and the impacts of food systems and climate change.
This Health Data Science Training Grant, led by Harvard University in collaboration with Heidelberg University and the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) as the central hub, builds capacity across African institutions. The programme trains a new generation of health data scientists through coursework, mentored research projects, and practicum placements at partner Spoke universities in Nigeria, Uganda, Tanzania, and Ghana.
The programme is creating a skilled network of African health data scientists equipped to apply innovative data science methods to real-world health challenges. By linking training with practical research experience, the initiative strengthens institutional capacity, enhances data-driven decision-making, and contributes to sustainable solutions in health systems and climate- and food-related health issues across the continent.
