Mental health integration programme (MhINT Scale-up)

The Issue

The CRH is collaborating with the Anova Health Institute to provide technical support to scale up the MhINT programme and SMhINT materials to 17 primary healthcare clinics each in the Northern Cape and Limpopo provinces.

Effective mental health care at primary care level requires trained personnel capable of delivering evidence-based counselling for depression, anxiety, and adherence. In low-resource settings, gaps in training, supervision, and ongoing support limit programme effectiveness.

The Intervention

The CRH team trains ANOVA Health Institute trainers and Department of Health district and facility staff to deliver the MhINT counselling programme confidently. Using experiential and participatory adult learning methods, trainees engage in practice sessions and receive mentorship. Master trainers provide ongoing supervision and onsite support to ensure high-quality implementation.

The Impact

By building local capacity and embedding structured supervision, the programme strengthens mental health service delivery in clinics. Trainees are equipped to provide consistent, evidence-based counselling, improving access to care and support for people living with depression, anxiety, and adherence challenges in Northern Cape and Limpopo.
