This multi-stakeholder collaboration investigates early and late teenage pregnancy and the intergenerational cycle of adolescent motherhood in KwaZulu-Natal. The study aims to generate a comprehensive understanding of the factors driving adolescent pregnancy and its long-term effects on young mothers and their communities.
Researchers are analysing routine data from multiple government departments and national surveys, alongside published research, to map trends and contributing factors. The study brings together partners from health, education, and social sectors to share data and insights for a coordinated provincial response.
By identifying patterns and underlying causes of teenage pregnancy, the project will guide the design of targeted, evidence-based interventions. Its findings will support policymakers in strengthening programmes that improve adolescent wellbeing and break the cycle of intergenerational teenage motherhood in KwaZulu-Natal.
