Growing Partnership for Higher Education and Research in Nutritional Epidemiology in Democratic Republic of Congo and Tanzania (GROWNUT-2)

The Issue

Nutrition disorders remain a major health challenge in sub-Saharan Africa, contributing to poor maternal and child health outcomes. There is a shortage of skilled nutrition researchers and academic leaders able to generate evidence to guide nutrition policy and practice in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Tanzania.

The Intervention

GROWNUT-2 expands the successful GROWNUT-1 partnership between the University of Kinshasa, University of Bergen, and UKZN by adding a new partner, MUHAS in Tanzania. The programme develops a cadre of African nutrition scholars through a blended learning approach combining face-to-face teaching, online engagement, and rural internships. It also strengthens collaboration with national nutrition bodies to align student research with policy priorities.

The Impact

GROWNUT-2 is producing a new generation of nutrition scientists in DRC and Tanzania through a sustainable, replicable training model. The programme has supported PhD and master’s students, hosted international workshops, and strengthened academic leadership. Early outcomes include multiple ethics-approved PhD projects, collaborative publications, and dissemination of findings at international conferences.
